Participating in GivingTuesday

Since 2012, GivingTuesday has been spreading the simple idea of doing good. Now, hundreds of millions of people give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
The GivingTuesday movement encourages people to consider giving every Tuesday and even every day. However, the official GivingTuesday date for the United States falls on November 28th. Whether you can donate, volunteer, or lend your voice, anyone can participate.
Donate resources
When we think of giving, usually monetary contributions are the first thing to come to mind. But depending on the organization you’re giving to, you can also donate resources like food, clothing, or other supplies. If you want to donate something besides money, here are some ideas:
- Feeding America is a nationwide network of food banks and programs that help millions of people find food and groceries in their community. The program can help you find your local food bank to donate items.
- Kids in Need Foundation provides core school supplies to students and teachers, along with environment-enhancing decor. This equips students with the tools and confidence to succeed and allows teachers to focus on lessons at hand rather than dealing with missing resources in their classrooms.
- American Red Cross can help you find a blood drive near you. The entire blood donation process from the time you arrive until the time you leave takes about an hour. The donation itself is only about 8-10 minutes on average. With a national blood shortage, there’s a need for blood donors of all blood types.
Donate time
Simply lending a hand in your community goes a long way. Try looking into volunteering at nearby hospitals or assisting an Activities Director at a local senior living center. If you’re an avid animal lover, contact an animal shelter. Shelter pets always need bathing, walking, and interaction. You can also put any special skills – such as writing, fundraising, or photography – to use for non-profit charities.
- Meals on Wheels supports more than 5,000 community-based programs across the country that address senior hunger and isolation. Not only do they accept monetary donations, but you can become a driver to deliver meals.
- Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) programs alleviate some financial burdens for families with sick children. Volunteers cook, clean, or simply listen to families with kids in the hospital.
- Boys and Girls Clubs of America takes volunteers for its afterschool programs to help with kids with homework, coach a game, or teach an art project. You’ll build healthy relationships with young people eager for guidance and have a positive impact on their lives.
- National Coalition for the Homeless is a movement of citizens who share the view that everyone should have a home. You can volunteer to serve food in shelters, rehab buildings, and much more.
Share your voice
Getting vocal about GivingTuesday is also popular. If you have a community to influence, you can use your platform to discuss GivingTuesday, advocate for a cause close to your heart, and encourage others to get involved in the spirit of generosity.
