AI Sign Language Translation

The next chapter of accessible communication.
Sorenson is developing AI-driven sign language translation to support communication between signed and spoken languages, including ASL and English, expanding access to everyday moments where human interpreters can’t always be present.

Where accessibility breaks down today

Professional interpreters remain essential for complex, context-rich communication. But many everyday interactions — short service moments, fast-moving environments, and frequently updated content — happen at a scale and pace that traditional models were never designed to support. For Deaf people, this often means delays, workarounds, or missed information. For businesses, it creates operational friction, unmet accessibility expectations, and missed opportunities. AI Sign Language Translation is designed to help fill those gaps — responsibly.

Two proofs of concept. One goal.

Sorenson is developing two AI Sign Language Translation solutions and working with customers through early pilots to understand how access can expand responsibly in real-world environments.

Everyday conversations, without workarounds

Supports short, everyday communication between Deaf and hearing people when a live interpreter isn’t immediately available or feasible. A Deaf person signs naturally, and the translation is displayed in English text in real time. The hearing person responds by voice, which is also displayed in text, so the interaction can move forward with ease. Can be used for: Two-way, in-person service interactions at front desks, service counters, retail and hospitality environments, transportation hubs, campus services, and more.

How ASL ↔ English translation works

The conversation flows in both directions, the way a real conversation should.

1

A Deaf individual signs naturally.

2

The hearing person in front of them sees the meaning in English text — instantly.

3

When the hearing person responds, their spoken words are displayed for the Deaf user.

Information in ASL, when it’s published

Provides one‑way translation from English into ASL using a photo‑realistic signing avatar, supporting faster, more predictable turnaround for ASL content compared to traditional production models. Can be used for: Training, LMS platforms, public and internal communications

How English-to-ASL content translation works

Information flows in one direction — from English into ASL — so Deaf audiences receive content in their language as it’s published.

1

An organization creates or publishes content in English.

2

The content is translated into ASL using a signing avatar. Human quality review is available if desired.

3

The organization can overlay the ASL avatar video over the original content for inclusive communication for Deaf audiences.

A different approach to accessibility innovation

Sorenson invests in people and technology together so accessibility can evolve alongside communication. Our focus is on functional access that delivers accuracy and responsiveness, without widening the technology divide. With decades of experience delivering sign language access at scale, Sorenson brings a deep understanding of Deaf user expectations. Deaf professionals are part of development, and Deaf advisors and interpreters shape testing, quality review, and real-world guardrails.
