Better Hearing and Speech Month

Every May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, or BHSM. The purpose of BHSM is to increase awareness of hearing health and communication challenges and encourage people to seek treatment. It also acknowledges the role practitioners like you play in treating affected individuals.
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) initiated BHSM in 1927, making it 96 years since it was first recognized.
To this day, ASHA is the leading organization for audiologist, speech pathologists, and scientists who research speech and hearing disorders in the U.S. It’s also the main force behind BHSM’s mission go drive awareness. ASHA runs a month-long Better Speech and Hearing Month campaign during May.
You Can Take Advantage of BHSM to Promote Awareness and Your Practice. BHSM gives you a public tie to promote the need for and importance of hearing health. Consider:
- Using the graphics ASHA offers on its site on your social media accounts or creating your own to promote awareness and encourage people to schedule an appointment.
- You can also share ASHA’s social media coverage on your own accounts
- Emailing your patients and sharing tidbits about hearing health
- Giving patients a flyer they can share that encourages others to get tested
- Offering incentives to schedule an appointment, like a free piece of swag
