Let’s reminisce about the good ol’ days for a moment: remember how simple it was to make friends when we were young? All our peers were thrown together for school and clubs, and it doesn’t get much more convenient than making friends with the kid who sits next to you.
As a “grownup,” it’s not so simple to expand your social circle, especially if you work remotely or are retired. So we compiled a list of places for seniors to meet new people while indulging your interests or finding new ones.
Volunteering
Do good, feel good, and meet others with the same values by volunteering for organizations in your community. Not sure where to start? Try these:
- AmeriCorps Seniors lets you choose how you want to help out from among thousands of opportunities nationwide.
- Meals on Wheels delivers food and kindness to seniors all over the U.S.
- SCORE provides opportunities for you to share your wealth of business knowledge as a mentor to up-and-coming entrepreneurs.
- Volunteer Match will pair you with a nonprofit organization in your area based on your interests.

You know what they say: never stop learning. Taking a class or exploring an interest can be fun in itself, but it’s also a good way to socialize.
- GetSetUp offers courses in a wide variety of areas — from art to financial planning.
- SeniorNet will help you put an end to that stereotype that seniors and technology don’t mix. It also has an online community and holds events.

Strictly Social
There’s nothing wrong with socializing for the sake of socializing. Sometimes all you want is great conversation and people you click with.
- Meetup.com makes its second appearance because you can find groups and activities for nearly anything — by values, identity, hobby, or culture.
- Stitch is an online community for people over 50, but members can also participate in in-person events.

While the internet has made it more convenient to meet people, civilization wouldn’t have come this far if that were the only way to do it. You can also check with your local community center, senior center, or public library about programs and activities they’re organizing or opportunities to get involved.
