Deaf Epidemiologist Dr. Lorne Farovitch

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields are broad and varied, offering many opportunities to find your passion. Dr. Lorne Farovitch found his purpose as an epidemiologist, investigating patterns and causes of disease and injury.
Dr. Farovitch specifically studies systemic barriers and how they affect the health of deaf people.
As part of his work, he founded the Global Deaf Research Institute (GDRI). He goes to other countries and works to build trust and communication so he can gather data.
Dr. Farovitch talked to us about how powerful data can be and how he uses it to benefit others — including interpreter education — and to break down barriers in society.
Importance of STEM
Lorne uses skills learned through his STEM education. That includes his studies at Rochester Institute of Technology, where Dr. Gerard Buckley has been working for years to advance education for Deaf students. See what the outgoing NTID president says about the importance of having Deaf in STEM fields.
