Emergency calling during a VRS outage

If you ever experience a service interruption and are unable to make a VRS call, we want you to be prepared. Here are three alternative options for placing an emergency call.

  • Text-to-911 — Some emergency call centers now accept text messages. If you cannot make a call, you can text for help if your 911 center offers text-to-911 service. You can download a list of participating locations from the FCC website.
  • Voice call to 911 — Dial 911 from a mobile phone or landline and don’t hang up. Be sure to call 911 from the location of the emergency. The emergency call center will recognize your call and send help.
  • Use a TTY — Dial 911 from your TTY if you have one. Although an older communication device, a TTY remains a very reliable method for reaching emergency services.
