Astley sat down for an interview with an audiologist for his recent hearing loss campaign. They chatted about hearing tests, his own need for hearing aids, and when individuals start to notice hearing loss.

But when you have a worldwide chart-topping song like Astley, you’re going to do more than just talk. He’s been singing an overhauled version of “Never Gonna Give You Up” that is full of misheard lyrics, including mentions of dessert spoons, naked aunts, and broken mittens.

The misheard version of his hit single is Astley’s way of approaching the serious subject of hearing health with a more upbeat attitude, one that he hopes will make the topic more approachable. Despite hearing loss affecting an estimated 48 million people nationwide, a 2021 poll showed only 20% of adults get a hearing test. Moreover, 51% of people who took the poll reported having hearing problems, but only 11% have sought treatment.

“Hearing loss feels like a scary subject, but mishearing things is so common and every day. For example, millions of people mishear famous song lyrics all the time,” says Astley
