Celebrating Two Cultures

Every September is Deaf Awareness Month, with International Week of the Deaf right in the middle. Check out this year’s themes from the World Federation of the Deaf. It’s a time to celebrate Deaf culture and identity and raise awareness of communication equity, especially for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

Starting here

We start our celebration of Deaf Awareness Month right here at Sorenson, not only because we serve the Deaf community but because we are part of the Deaf community. That goes beyond just being a VRS company. We have hundreds of Deaf employees at every level and in every department — some who’ve been with us from the start and many who continue to join us on our mission.

Sharing deaf resources

It's a great time to share resources about Deaf culture, accessibility, and communication solutions. For example, if you know people who have lots of Zoom meetings for work and struggle to get an ASL interpreter for those meetings, share this article on making Zoom Deaf-inclusive with them!

Sharing ASL

Or do your friends/family want to learn ASL or improve their skills but have no convenient place to learn locally? The American Society for Deaf Children offers online classes for ASL in English and classes for ASL in Spanish.

Speaking of Spanish, September 15 – October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Sorenson in Spanish

We know that many of you either have Spanish speaking family and friends or deal with Hispanic-owned businesses. Did you know we have Spanish features and multiple ways to access Spanish VRS? We’re hosting a webinar to explain them all and show how to use them.
